This is maybe the most widely distributed zine I’ve made… something I sort of look back on with remorse. What started as an attempt to help visitors navigate my neighborhood while I was busy Creating Value for Shareholders™, became a short-sighted celebration of local businesses without understanding their further reaching history and relationship to long term members of the community. Brooklyn is no stranger to gentrification, but as I think about making a similar zine for my new neighborhood in Portland, it will be a little more conscientious. This isn’t a roast of any particular business (well…), but in any case, it’s deeply out of date by this point.
I do, however, really like the format of this zine: guide booklet on one side, map on the other. I can fit about 25 different locations, each with its own little rant and rave. I feel like I’ve been in my new home just about long enough to give this another earnest try, but I’m going to give it one more cycle of the seasons before committing it to paper.
